Bridging Programme

In January 2011, DFA created a programme to bridge the gap between being a dance student and becoming a professional dancer. The programme – which could be described as a kind-of finishing school or graduate programme – helps students who want to become professional dancers to learn the craft while building up their skill, technique and stamina.

DFA CEO Philip Boyd recognised the need for such a programme when senior students – who had received dance training while attending Western Cape Education Department focus schools for the arts – approached him for further training through DFA, because they had heard about its high standard.

DFA managed to sponsor these students, enabling them to work at its Athlone studios all day – attending classes and rehearsals, building repertoire, learning how to choreograph and attending the Teachers’ Training Course. They also have the opportunity to perform, having joined the group of DFA students who were selected to be part of Young InSPIRAtions.

As the programme is refined and developed, DFA would like to include some musical theatre work (singing, dancing and acting) to give students a more fully rounded set of skills to meet the demands of a career in the performing arts today.

The first group of talented students showed phenomenal improvement in 2011 and DFA hopes to continue and expand the Bridging Programme so that, when DFA ‘graduates’ leave school, those who want to pursue a career in dance can spend a year on the programme. This will help equip them to join a professional dance company or further their training at a university school of dance. In time, DFA also hopes to open the Bridging Programme to outside students.
