African Contemporary

A group of 25 female dancers, aged between 14 and 20, who show talent in African and Contemporary styles, have been selected to receive intensive training in these styles so they can develop their skill and technique. These students have specialised tuition four times a week (including Saturdays) under the leadership of coordinator and teacher Hope Nongqongqo and Bruno Wani. They are drawn from all the communities where DFA’s Cape Town Outreach Programme has classes.
As part of their training, Hope and Bruno try to instill in the students a sense of pride, encouraging them to appreciate their identity and traditions so they do not forget their background and culture.
Through having the opportunity of working with guest teachers and choreographers, as well as performing on stage, these students will build up experience towards making a career in the arts.
The students are divided into Senior and Junior groups. The Junior group, aged 11 to 16, feeds into the Senior group, which motivates the junior dancers to refine their technique so they can progress. In 2012, the focus will be on building the Sub-Junior group, in order to sustain and expand the African Contemporary Programme.
